It seems a little unlikely at first, but bear with me. These two settings have a lot in common. An adult sensibility that's contempuous of authority and freely embraces the absurd, for starters. But there's more to it than that. Both Al Amarja and Pianosa are little-known islands in the Tyrennhian Sea that appear on almost no maps. Is it too great a reach to think that they may be the same location? Of course, the history of Al Amarja records that it was liberated from the Germans by one Monique D'Aubbaine, who basically bought it off the Germans. What if that's not the case? What if she actually bought it from the American government and then hushed it up? It's never been conclusively established where she got the money to make such a purchase, but I have a theory about that too. What if Monique D'Aubbaine is actually the same woman who appears in Catch 22 identified only as 'Nately's Whore'? What if she came into her millions as a result of Nately's will leaving his money to her? There are two ways to use this crossover. The first is to let this be an interesting footnote to Al Amarja's history - albeit a very embarassing one for Her Exaltedness, one that could even create a backlash that would sweep her from power. It's an interesting historical curiosity for any WWII veterans who might happen to be visiting, too - maybe they don't even realise that Pianosa and Al Amarja are the same place until they see Monique's face on the news. The other is to actually set a game during World War Two. This will require a little work to set up, but it is perfectly doable. The adventure 'The Jackboot Stomp' in The Myth of Self contains a large amount of information about Al Amarja at that time. Maybe the players could be the resistance prior to American arrival, or a political embarassment to the new government after the war is over. And it's hard to believe that things could have got as strange as they did in Catch 22 without the Cut-Ups being involved somewhere along the line. |
